HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: BOOKS for a Halloween Addict!

Time's running out.
Only 10 more shopping days 'til Christmas.
You've still gotta buy stuff for that Halloween Addict and horror fan, but what to do--- WHAT TO DO??!
Books, man.
They're small.
They travel well.
They wrap easily.
Books.

Here's 13 (Oooooo STILL spooooky 13!!!) options.

1)  THE ART AND MAKING OF MONSTER HOUSE

Monster House is one of those animated films that embraces Halloween to some extent.  Well, maybe not "embraces" but at least gives it a hug and a "pat-pat."  There's autumn... there's kids... there's a MONSTER HOUSE.  It's a fun film and I try and throw it on the DVD player every October.
This book has some GORGEOUS artwork from the pre-production of the film all the way through post-production.  Really great stuff.
Check out this pic of the silhouetted house with autumn in the background.  Beautiful.

2)  THE TWILIGHT SAGA COLLECTION

Again... this isn't MY series... but I'm comfortable enough with my Halloween-hood to acknowledge that there are people out there who like their vampires and werewolves hunky and heartthrob-ey.
So for those people there is this full set of all of the Twilight Saga books.
Enjoy with a copy of Tiger Beat.

3)  TRICK 'R TREAT:  TALES OF MAYHEM, MYSTERY AND MISCHIEF.

A fantastic companion to the fantastic film.  Tons of stuff in this.  Pre-production art, masks, comics, postcards and MORE.  Should be at the top of any Halloween Addict's list.

4)  OCTOBER DREAMS:  A CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN - OOP

Though this book is out of print it's a MUST FIND for a Halloween Addict.
I found this book on a lazy afternoon in a bookstore window of a sleepy, New England seaside town.  It's the book that inspired me to create HalloweenAddict.com.  When the title says it's a "Celebration of Halloween" they're not kidding.
It's a compilation book featuring ALL Halloween-related material.  I'll let the Amazon write-up lay it out for you because it's more succinctly put than I could be:

A winner of the International Horror Guild Award, October Dreams: A Celebration of Halloween is undoubtedly the grandest horror anthology ever compiled on the genre's signature holiday, and unlikely to be supplanted in that position. Weighing in at almost 650 pages, this intelligently selected compendium contains work from nearly every contemporary bestselling author, cult favorite, and hot up-and-comer in horror. The volume mixes a generous amount of well-written new fiction with classic reprints, several "Favorite Halloween Memories," an informative "Short History of Halloween" by Paula Guran, a well-chosen "Overview of Halloween Films" by Gary A. Braunbeck, and an equally useful "Reader's Guide to Halloween Fiction" by Stefan Dziemianowicz. Many of the authors contribute both a story and a Favorite Memory, and Ray Bradbury, to whom the volume is rightfully dedicated, contributes these and a poem.
No review can do justice to an anthology whose table of contents crowds three pages. But perhaps a taste of three stories will suggest the breadth and depth of the whole. Ray Bradbury's subtle "Heavy Set" considers what it might be like to be the mother of a muscular, disturbed, and exceptionally attached son. In the West Coast gothic "A Redress for Andromeda," Caitlin R. Kiernan presents a beautifully written consideration of the costs of a hidden secret. Artist Gahan Wilson proves himself also talented at fiction with "Yesterday's Witch," in which trick-or-treaters find the neighborhood witch isn't any such thing ... or is she?
October Dreams is highly recommended to all fans of horror and dark fantasy. --Cynthia Ward

That says it all.  If you are a Halloween Addict and you were to have ONE book for your self-imposed desert island... THIS... IS... IT.
'Nuff said.

5)  LIO'S ASTONISHING TALESFROM THE HAUNTED CRYPT OF UNKNOWN HORRORS

As someone who lived through--and sorely misses-- the golden-age of newspaper comics, I appreciate the comic "Lio" for its Calvin & Hobbes-like cleverness and Bloom County-like attitude.
From the cover of this book which is an homage to Tales from the Crypt, to the fact that Lio regularly engages with zombies, spiders, giant squids and more Lio is a comic that any Halloween Addict should be reading ... AND it's funny.  Pick it up.

6)  IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN:  THE MAKING OF A TELEVISION CLASSIC
We've all watched the special a million times.  But now you can go behind the scenes and read about what it took to put the World War I Flying Ace and Linus crying to the heavens "Oh Great Pumpkin where are you?!" on the small screen.

7)  THE HAUNTED MANSION:  FROM THE MAGIC KINGDOM TO THE MOVIES
Any fan of scary worth his weight in screams (I'm a little punchy today) like the imagination the Imagineers (hey, I get it!) at Disney put into a quirky little dark ride called The Haunted Mansion.
This book will tell you everything you want to know (and then some) about the history, implementation, behind the scenes and magic behind the infamous ride at Disneyland, Disneyworld and Foreign markets.
LOADS of pictures from the Disney vaults.

8)  HALLOWEEN COSTUMES AND OTHER TREATS
If you love the old Collegeville and Ben Cooper costumes you will love this book.  Providing a pictorial history of popular culture and fads it's a fascinating look through America.  The book also delves into Halloween history from the 20s on up through the 70s.
A great reference guide and coffee table book!

9)  PORTABLE GRINDHOUSE:  THE LOST ART OF THE VHS BOX VOL. 1

Another great reference guide and coffee table conversation starter.  As someone who worked at a video store in the 80s I, too, believe that an art has been lost from the days of VHS to the leap to DVD.  Now we mostly get "floating celebrity head" posters and artwork for films.  But there was a time where a painted cover was able to get more people to rent a cheap flick than any floating head ever could.
Can't wait for the release of this book.

10)  THE HALLOWEEN TREE:  DELUXE EDITION - OOP
Sure you should have any version of Ray Bradbury's classic tale on your shelf... but seek out this out of print hardcover edition featuring a gorgeous painted cover and artwork.
This signed limited edition contains a typeset version of Bradbury's preferred text, the original manuscript (complete with handwritten corrections), a screenplay Bradbury wrote before he wrote the novel (in manuscript form) and the typeset version of his Hanna-Barbera screenplay. The front and back covers are Bradbury oil paintings of Halloween trees.
A big-ticket item and something you'll have to search for on eBay or through the Amazon used link, but TOTALLY worth it for this classic.

11)  HOW TO HAUNT YOUR HOUSE
This was highly recommended on the Haunt Style website and I hope Santa brings it to me so that I may peruse its wonderfulness myself.
There are many of these types of books on the market but as it was endorsed by a fellow Halloween blogger, I'm inclined to think this is one of the ones to pick up.  Check out the official site for the book which includes a video review HERE.

12)  ANYTHING BY STEPHEN KING
He's a legend.  And he seems to churn out phone-book-sized scary tomes faster than any mortal man should.  Which is why I think Stephen King is a demon.  Take a look at a picture of him smiling.  Tell me that man's not a demon.
Regardless of whether he has a soul or not, I've been reading his stuff since before I can remember reading.
I'm always partial to his short story compilations, but should you be one of his loyal disciples you probably want his latest which is called "Under the Dome."  The plot sounds a lot like The Simpsons Movie but I doubt 20th Century Fox will sue as I'm sure his plot doesn't involve Homer riding a motorcycle.
Anything by this master of the macabre will be a welcome site under the tree.  Flip through the carousel widget below for a small sample of his work.

13) THE OCTOBER COUNTRY
More Bradbury can't be a bad thing.  Reprinting stuff that's long been out, check out this compilation for a mixed bag o' weird from one of the masters.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: Board Games for a Halloween Addict!

Another 13 (Ooooooo SPOOOOOOKY 13!) items for the Halloween Addict on your Christmas-Hanukkah-Holiday list.

Today's entry: BOARD GAMES!

To all the young-uns:
Once upon a time there were things called "board games" that families and friends used to play together. This was way before cable TV, the internet and videogames. 'Course... you can get the videogame version of boardgames on compilations like "Hasbro's Family Game Night"... so it's the circle of life, I guess---but I digress.

These days board games seem to be a dying breed of fun relegated to camping trips, cabin rentals and evenings when people want to be "quaint."
Though the rules haven't changed much, there's a ton of fun to be had with different scary or Halloween-themed games that you, your friends and a little thing called "imagination" can enjoy.  Let's take a look...

1)  SKELETON JENGA
Most people know what Jenga is.  The trademarked name has become a "proprietary eponym" to represent games where people take turns pulling parts out of a tower and the last one to topple it, loses.
But here's a cool tower o' bones that I found and it's simply called "Bones Stacking Game."
Yep that oughta do it.
Best thing about Jenga is that it travels well.  A small rectangular box holds everything you need.
Worst thing is that you need a stable, flat, raised platform which isn't always available.
Still, the set is cool and can be pulled out in October or anytime.

Also of note and included in the link at bottom is an official "Halloween Jenga."  Though it's cool because it's in black and orange blocks, it's not nearly as cool as having a skull on top and each piece looks like a femur.

2)  BOO-OPOLY
The title doesn't lie:  you can probably tell what this is without reading anymore about it.
It's an un-official scary monopoly game.
Complete with a skeleton and jack o' lantern on the box this is specifically Halloween-centric with Haunted Houses for hotels and cards like "Win pumpkin carving contest."

3)  SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR MONOPOLY
Looking for a Monopoly that's a little more official but still with a Halloween twist?  How about the official Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Monopoly?
Comes with glow-in-the-dark pieces (which ALREADY makes it awesome) and is based on the 20 year-running Halloween specials of the series.

4)  IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN YAHTZEE
YAHTZEE!!!!!!!
Charlie Brown Halloween special images on the dice.  Seriously.
Same game, with a Peanuts twist.

5)  BUMP IN THE NIGHT
I know absolutely nothing about this game except that it's got a cool box and is called "Bump in the night."
Anyone?
Anyone?
Bueller?

6)  GLOOM
Sometimes bad things happen to pathetic people.
Featuring artwork that's a cross between Tim Burton and Charles Addams, the game premise is simple and morbid:  make your characters suffer the greatest tragedies possible before dying.

7)  NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS SCRABBLE
Branding old games seems to be the cool thing to do (see Yahtzee above) but this one gets special points for having a spectacular board featuring smiling Jack and tombstones on the tile holders.  Fantastic.

8)  LAST NIGHT ON EARTH THE ZOMBIE GAME
Some of the Amazon reviews have proclaimed this the "Best of the Zombie board games..."
You'll have to play it yourself to find out if that's true.  Choose your hero... multiple outcomes and the game is supposed to create a cinematic feel.

9)  OH NO... ZOMBIES!
Yay!  More Zombies!
Is this one fun?  Dunno.  But it's from the infamous Archie McPhee, makers of rubber chickens, bacon band-aids and avenging unicorns... how can it NOT be?

10)  ZOMBIES!!!
What's that?  You'd like ANOTHER zombie game?  Well here you are.
This one sounds like a board game version of Left 4 Dead.  With multiple map tiles you can get an endless supply of different play-throughs.  Collect weapons... don't lose a life... fight through zombies.  And a box that is certainly stealing--er, paying homage to Ash from Evil Dead 2.  What's NOT to like?!

11)  IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN BOARD GAME
Not into Yahtzee?
Trick or treat with the Peanuts gang and the 1st one to share their candy with Linus (waiting for the Great Pumpkin, I would assume) WINS.
I TOTALLY want to play this while watching the special next year.  It's even got a spinner.
A SPINNER!

12)  Vintage Game: THE GREEN GHOST

Like I mentioned at the top of this article, board games have been around a while and some of the golden age ones are better than anything we'll find on store shelves today.  Check eBay for a monster (no pun intended) of a game called the Green Ghost Game.
Just look at the picture:  lots of scary pieces... a ghost spinner... it's HUGE!
Maybe it's even in your basement right now.

To know more check out THIS website for info and even links to the latest eBay listings.  Or check HERE too.

13)  Vintage Game:  IDEAL'S HAUNTED HOUSE
A game from the 1960s, IDEAL's Haunted House most noted feature was that it was the board game you played VERTICALLY.

Seriously, check your basement or attic.  Your parents or grandparents might have this one too.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE: DVDs for a Halloween Addict!

Well it's that time of year.  The rest of the world has put away their spooky stuff in giant orange and black plastic bins to be accessed in 11 months... The remaining Autumn Thanksgiving cornucopia displays have been replaced with visages of snowmen, Santa Clauses and holly.

But once a Halloween Addict, always a Halloween Addict, says I, and I hope to present a bunch of Holiday Gift Guides in the next few weeks for the Halloween Addicts out there, and the creatures who love them.
Whenever possible links will be provided to where to purchase the items.  (Plug:  Buy through the Amazon links and it helps keep Halloween Addict up and running.  End of plug.)

Let's start with an easy one:  DVDs.

Here are 13 (Why 13?  Because 13 is spooooooky... I dunno... go with it...) DVDs for the Halloween Addict this Holiday Season.

1)  TRICK 'R TREAT

What more can I say about this film that I haven't already said HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE?
Trick 'r Treat is an homage to the Halloween season and things that go bump in the night.
It may not be a perfect film, but it oozes with atmosphere and the Halloween spirit and is a throwback to anthology films of the 80s.
Out finally on DVD and Blu-Ray after being shelved by Warner Bros. for a couple of years, this is a movie that I know I'll be throwing on in the Ides of March when I start to get depressed about how far away October is and it'll instantly transport me back to that magical time period when the nights are crisp, the leaves are colored and the jack o' lanterns glow.

NOTE:  The Blu-Ray has more extras (especially a commentary by Dougherty) so if you like your bells and whistles go Blu.

2)  PEANUTS HOLIDAY COLLECTION:  DELUXE EDITION

If you don't already own the Peanuts Holiday Specials you, sir, are about due.
Not only are these DVDs remastered so they're crisper and clearer than you ever have seen them, but the discs contain introspective "Making of a Classic" shorts that show the care and behind the scenes work that was put into these now iconic specials.
You'll buy it for Halloween's "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" but you'll stay for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  (In the Thanksgiving episode Sally actually says "It's Thanksgiving already?!  I haven't even finished my Halloween candy!")

Amazon is currently having a sale on Holiday films so you can get this set for only $22.99--- that's only $7.63333333333333333333333333333 dollars a DVD!

3)  GARFIELD HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS

Another one to snag now in the Amazon Holiday sale.  THREE Garfield specials for ONLY $5.49.
Of course it's on here for "Garfield's Halloween Adventure" which is a must-watch for anyone looking for "Candy-candy-candy-candy-candy...".

4)  "GHOSTBUSTERS, WHADDYA WANT?"

Sure Ghostbusters has been on DVD for some time now, but the film has had a resurgence in interest thanks to the Videogame (which I'll profile in a future gift list), the Blu-Ray release and nods made by such modern horror (Horror-Comedy?  Horromedy?) films as Zombieland

Maybe not as large a group as Ghostbusters fans, but there is a large faction of people who grew up in the 80s and remember fondly "The Real Ghostbusters" spin-off cartoon TV series and toy line.
'Til now they've had to live with sporadic Sony releases on DVD and an overpriced out-of-print Time-Life Limited Edition Set.
Well now you can own the ENTIRE series on DVD.  On top of that, it's available in a case made to look like the Ghostbusters firehouse.  Sweet.
A little expensive but can you really put a price on owning a childhood influencing television series?  I think not.

And in case you're getting a brand spankin' new Blu-Ray player under your Halloween----er, Christmas tree, then why not have your player's inaugural spin be the original Ghostbusters film in glorious Hi-Def?
The original is available for the 1st time on Blu-Ray and is a great companion to your Playstation 3 or new player.

5)  DRAG ME TO HELL
Look at any horror fan's Top Movies list and you'll probably find something from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead Trilogy.
We all know the story:  Sam hit it big with a little independent film called, oh... what was it... oh right SPIDER-MAN, and fans were surprised and delighted to hear he would return to the genre that started his career.

All that said, Sam has NOT lost his ability to scare and gross-out.  Opening weekend garnered it 95% on RottenTomatoes.com.    Drag Me to Hell is a fun movie that is very much in tone and pace with his earlier efforts.  The discs are skimpy on the extras but the film is the draw anyway.

6)  AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON

You know this movie, you love this movie.  So why buy it again?
Two reasons:
1)  You can get it on Blu-Ray.
2)  The full length documentary "Beware the Moon" which is available on both the standard AND Blu versions.
I'm a sucker for a good, long, non-EPK "Making-of" and from what I hear from Horror-Movie-A-Day HERE at THREE HOURS (that's longer than the FILM!) it's in-depth and a must-see.

7) CHILD'S PLAY

Having grown up in the 80s I consider Chucky to be part of the "big 4" of slasher franchises (the others being Friday the 13th, Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street.)
This is supposed to be about the same disc as the Birthday Edition DVD that came out almost a year ago.  Difference?  Blu-Ray.
I wonder if I'll think Chucky looks too plastic-ey in High Definition...

8)  NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
A cult film that fans have been bootlegging for years, it is FINALLY available on both DVD and Blu-Ray.
Two words:  Atkins annnnnnd Atkins.
"The good news:  your dates are here.  The bad news:  they're dead."

9)  CORALINE

Written by Neil Gaiman... Directed by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas) ... This ain't Disney.
Instead you get a dark and atmospheric CGI tale.
Many versions to choose from:  Single Disc, Double Disc and Blu-Ray but ALL come with 3D glasses.

10)  THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Speaking of Henry Selick, if you don't own this holiday classic by now, what.. in the... hell are you doing?!
Never been a better time.  Available on Blu-Ray with Making ofs, Tim Burton's Frankenweenie short, Burton's original Vincent short, AND a Digital Copy you can't a more feature-filled version for fans of this film.

11)  TRUE BLOOD Season 1

I've found people either love or hate this show, and come holiday vacation I shall find out on which side I fall as this set sits on my shelf waiting to be watched when I have time to put butt to couch.
Anna Paquin... Vampires... what's not to like?

12) HELLRAISER Boxed Set

If you are a Hellraiser fan, then THIS is the set for you.
Built to look like a Lament Configuration (aka "Hellraiser puzzle cube") this boxed set contains "the good ones":  Hellraiser, Hellraiser II:  Hellbound, and Hellraiser Blu-Ray.  The set contains 3 hours of bonus material, and did I mention how cool the packaging is?
Don't play with this alone unless you like chains flying out into your flesh.  Just sayin'...

13)  HALLOWEEN 30th Anniversary Boxed Set

This came out a couple years ago, but if you're one of the few who doesn't own any of this classic slasher series, here's a cool way to catch up.
You get the original (i.e. "THE BEST") John Carpenter classic, a Blu-Ray copy, the "Extended" (i.e. "TV version" which is out of print), Part IV: The Return of Michael Myers, Part V:  The Revenge of Michael Myers, and the great documentary on the entire series:  Halloween: 25 Years of Terror.  That's 6 discs AND a mini-Myers mask that looks more like Abe Vigoda than William Shatner (sorry, I'm a mask snob).

There you go.  13 discs for a Halloween Addict and horror fan.
I hope to have more of these guides up in the next few days ('cause them shopping days are dwindling) but we'll see what gets done.
Happy Hallowukkah!
Merry Decemberween!
