It took almost two years to the day, but Mike Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat is finally hitting DVD and Blu-Ray TODAY!
For regular readers of Halloween Addict, this comes as no surprise. Just a quick search brings up at least 5 different dedicated posts to this masterpiece and who knows how many other times I've mentioned it on the site.
Check 'em out HERE, HERE, HERE annnnnnd HERE.
As for my "Review" of the film, I'm not going to give you much and that's on-purpose. I don't want to ruin anything for you.
Don't get over-hyped: It's not a complex film.
It's just simple, brilliant and fun. The movie just knows what it is. And others who know what it is, will have a great time watching it.
I'll just say this:
It's a love letter to Halloween.
A gorgeous homage to things that go bump in the night.
And though it's not breaking any new ground, it's the type of film whose viewing transcends generations and becomes a tradition.
If you like anthology films such as Creephsow, Creepshow II, Twilight Zone The Movie, Cats Eye, and series such as Tales from the Darkside and Tales from the Crypt... this is your movie.
It's smart enough to throw winks at those who enjoyed horror films from the 70s, 80s and 90s but original enough to take in new viewers enamored with True Blood and Twilight. Like many good horror films such as An American Werewolf in London, Scream and Drag Me to Hell, it takes the viewer on a ride that switches effortlessly between humor and horror.
Best of all it centers around the Halloween season, traditions and imagery and should be watched yearly with It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, John Carpenter's Halloween and Garfield's Halloween Adventure, every year. An instant classic... and I don't use those words offhandedly.
As for the DVD release, per my post HERE, let's see if Warner Bros. nailed anything on my wish list for my "dream disc." Here were my "wants":
1) Teaser Poster art on front of disc.
Verdict: Nope. They went with the floating heads. Booooo.
2) Plastic DVD case colored orange.
Verdict: Nope. Too expensive. Why put extra money into something that you're trying to bury. That's fine. It was my dream disc, wish list after all.
3) DVD looks like Sam's lollipop.
Verdict: Most likely not. I haven't purchased and opened it yet, but I'm guessing it's easier just to keep it Netflix gray with the title of the movie on it.
UPDATE: IT DOES LOOK LIKE SAM'S LOLLIPOP!!! Woo hoooooo!
4) DVD Extras: Mike Dougherty's "Seasons Greetings" original short that inspired the film.
Verdict: YES! WOOOOOO HOOO! That's Halloween Addict 1, Warner Bros. 3. Hm.
There's also commentary which I always enjoy.
So that's HA 2, WB 2.
TIE GAME!
Did I mention Trick 'r Treat is on DVD today?
Let's just take a minute to soak that in.
Ok, time's up. Now get out there, buy and watch one of the greatest Halloween films ever made!
DEAL ALERT: Thanks to a heads-up from the Trick 'r Treat Twitter feed HERE, you get a $25 Sideshow Collectibles gift certificate with every purchase of the Blu-Ray of Trick 'r Treat. That's a pretty good deal as the 15" Sam vinyl figure goes for $59.99 so that brings it down to a very reasonable $34.99. And with the Sideshow website saying that the figures will be available in December '09 that means it's prime gifting time for yourself for the holidays.
For more merch check out the Amazon links below. There's 99 cent music tracks, full CD soundtracks, graphic novels, action figures and more. As always, any purchases made through the links below sends a few pennies to Halloween Addict to keep the site up and running.
Happy Trick 'r Treat Day everyone!

Did a post on this flick on my site, too!
I haven't seen it yet, been waiting for the DVD release so I can buy it and show that $$$ WILL be spent on things like this, even if the studios don't think so.
Can't wait!
Actually you ended up getting 2 more off your wishlist.
I just opened my copy and the floating heads cover is just a slip case...while it's not the teaser poster on the actual case cover, it's something very very cool!
And yes, the DVD does look like Sam's lollipop!!
Enjoy!

Wings: I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think!
Chad:
Re: DVD like Sam's lollipop... Really?! That's fantastic. I'd like to think that my wish list influenced those choices but perhaps that's a inflated sense of self-importance...
Oh, I so wanted to play hooky today and stay home and watch this!!! Thanks for all the great info!!
Cheers!
I will say it is not the best movie out now days but I do love it watched it last night and it is good as long as you dont expect the best movie of all time
Frog Queen: Yeah, I had a similar dilemma. It's hard to justify taking the day off to buy and watch a DVD.
Robert: That is a very fair and honest review and respect that.
It's certainly in my top 5 Halloween DVDs to watch every year.
Hmmm... maybe that's a future post...
I FINALLY got to see this last night & I loved it. I will be buying this DVD very soon. Probably next week when 'Drag Me to Hell' comes out. That way I can get both DVD's at once!!
This film is like a love letter to Halloween. Waited two long years to see it, then, about a week and a half ago, went to a screening hosted by Dougherty. I wasn't disappointed at all.
The companion book is amazing, check it out if you can.
