A Haunting in Connecticut - True Ghost Story?

Well I still haven't seen it and the reviews are mixed, but The Haunting in Connecticut remained in the Top 10 at the Box Office this weekend bringing its total up to 49.3 million.
When all is said and done, I'm sure Lionsgate will be crying all the way to the bank.

Many of you know that this film proclaims to be "based on a true story."

What many of you may NOT know is that this film was based on a Discovery Channel documentary which was based on the true story.
That's a lot of degrees of "based on."

Some of the forums I've been reading proclaim the doc to be scarier than the film so you can watch for yourself at THIS YouTube link HERE and see what you think.
OR purchase it from the Amazon link below and watch it in crystal clear DVD clarifying clarity.

As a kid who grew up being terrified of television's "Real People" and "That's Incredible" ghost stories, I can totally see where cheesy TV special effects and dramatic creepy music can be the stuff of nightmares.
I still get shudders when I see this picture from the infamous "That's Incredible" "Haunted Toys R Us" segment.

Check it out and let me know your judgement.

We went to go see it this last week. You know what, it was better than I thought it would be.

Yes, it was a bit Hollywood, but I liked it.

It did have that nice subtle creepiness to it, not that slash/hack business that most folks are expecting.

My fiance did see the special and was hoping that it (the movie) wouldn't be too overdone. He said it wasn't.

Go check it out if you get a chance! At the very least, it's a fun escape for a little while.

Thanks for the review, Ruthie!

If it's a bit more "Exorcism of Emily Rose" than "The Haunting" remake, I'll probably like it.

I saw it tonight. It is a little closer to "Emily Rose."

It's not fantastic by any means, and some of the jump scares are a little cheap (suddenly shrieking music, etc.), but overall, I was pleasantly surprised.

I'll have to watch the Discovery doc.

I saw the movie last night with my boyfriend, and, honestly, I was terrified to get home alone in the dark...
My boyfriend and I both worked in a haunted house and it seems to us that a lot of the really good scares (the ones that got us, not the cheap and obvious screeching music and so on) were kind of what you would find in a good haunted house.
I will admit that some of the things did scare me a bit more than they probably should have, but since the whole thing is basically based around a funeral and I have a paralyzing fear of dead things that's not surprising.
It really is worth a watch, and I definitely plan to get it on DVD.

Also, I saw the Discovery Channel documentary and from what I remember they seem to be pretty similar. Actually the whole series is pretty good, but Ed and Lorraine Warren are complete hacks and I don't watch any episodes with them in it. :)

Sorry this was long... :)

Thanks for the review Kira!

I'm about half way through the Discovery doc and am enjoying it.

I hope, when you say you and your boyfriend worked in a "haunted house," you mean a Halloween 'haunted maze' and not an actual possessed domicile.
Because THAT would freak ME out...

just happened upon your blog ~ great, btw~ !!!

I grew up in Stratford, CT ~ right next door to the infamous "Lindley Street" where this was actually taking place back in the 70's...

the newspaper (Bridgeport post) was infatuated by it and everyday there was something more to read about...the talking cat, the priest, the tv...just crazy stuff....we would drive down the road and sit, parked across the street and watch the house like crazed lunatics...waiting for a sign of a ghost...or worse!

If you google "Stratford CT. Haunting", "Phelps Mansion" or "Goody Basset", you'll understand where I was raised...now I live in VA and long for the creepy old cemetaries of my beloved North~

Blessed be!
Lori

Wow Lori!
You lived right down the street???!!
That's awesome.
So is a talking cat.

Was the paper reporting on this stuff as the family was living in the house?
And when you were sitting staring at the house, was the family still living in it or was it empty? (Watching an empty house is creepier I think...)

I grew up in CT Too. Stratford CT to be exact and you last commentor was WAY far off. The actual Haunting in CT was based on a house in Southington and not Lindley street. As a matter of fact, you can live in Stratford and live down the street from the Lindley street house because Lindley St is in Bridgeport (our neighboring town)

lindley street was, however, amazing. It was haunted in the 70s and it was a nutty media circus. Police officers reported seeing a fridge lift off the floor. These reports are available if you do some googling. Ofcoarse there's always sceptics and people saying it was fake, but lots of people swear they saw lots of things. Including a cat that sings Xmas carols

Lindsay: A cat that sings Christmas carols???
Does it know "Silver Bells"?
I love that one...
